Morrisons help their early-career colleagues grow and develop all the right skills so you can do what you love, and make a whole career out of it. Public sector and operations: Northern

Northern’s network spans the entire North of England, with major corporate hubs in Leeds and York. It offers a General Explorer graduate scheme, an Engineering graduate scheme and Year-in-Industry placements.
The highlights: Northern operates its own Ofsted-accredited training programme. Historically, you had to be 21 to become a train driver or conductor apprentice. However, a major industry shift this summer means the minimum age is dropping to 18. While the rigorous two-year training means they will likely be 20 before they solo-drive a train, it opens a massive, immediate door for school-leavers.
Why Northern: Rail roles offer immense job security and an appeal to Gen Z’s desire for “social value” – knowing your work connects communities. Financially, it’s highly lucrative: an apprentice can start with zero prior experience and progress to a train driver salary of £65,000 per year. Entry-level roles like station retail and train presentation (cleaning) also feature rapid internal progression to management within 6 to 12 months.
What’s it actually like? “I like having a sense of responsibility and trust as well. Throughout my journey, it’s always been really organised. All the staff have been great. I definitely think my confidence has grown from the start to now. I’m able to work on a lot more jobs independently.” — Northern Early Careers Apprentice
What to do next: While structured schemes recruit around September and January, Northern’s entry-level station and customer roles are “always on.” Keep an eye out for upcoming local recruitment drives.

As Leeds cements its reputation as the UK’s largest legal hub outside of London, forward-thinking firms are completely rewriting how young people enter the profession. Blacks Solicitors is leading the charge by helping school-leavers bypass the traditional university debt trap.
The highlights: Blacks offers a highly sought-after six-year legal apprenticeship programme starting at age 18. Instead of racking up university debt, apprentices work four days a week in the office and spend one day studying at university, earning a competitive salary from day one and qualifying fully as a solicitor. They also offer a work experience placement scheme specifically targeting 17-to-21-year-olds to give them real, on-the-floor exposure.
The culture: This isn’t a firm where junior staff are hidden away. Blacks is moving to a brand-new, multi-floor central office space designed specifically to enhance face-to-face mentorship. Junior staff are actively pushed to build their public speaking and advocacy skills through their internal fortnightly “Wednesday Club” lunchtime presentation sessions. To ensure a healthy work-life balance, junior billing targets are capped at a highly reasonable four hours per day to preserve the enjoyment of the job.
What’s it actually like? “Blacks is a great firm to work for. I was extremely nervous at first, having never before worked full-time in an office, however everybody is friendly and easy to get on with. A number of people went out of their way to say hello and have a chat about the Scheme and Blacks. I even get a significant amount of contact with the Managing Partner, which I am told is quite rare in law firms.” — Blacks Legal Apprentice
What to do next: Look out for application openings, and practise your verbal communication skills – Blacks actively prioritises confident candidates who aren’t afraid to pick up the phone!

What’s new: Keep an eye out for their newly launched Transport Planning Technician Apprenticeship (Level 3), designed to teach the high-level logistics behind routing and community transport management.
What’s it actually like? “I’ve really enjoyed my time on the graduate scheme with First Bus. Throughout the programme, I’ve been pushed and challenged to develop my skills and grow within the business. I’ve also had the opportunity to take on a range of different experiences, including my level 7 CIPD, Prince 2 project management qualification and even my PCV bus driving license! These have all been invaluable for my development.” Jamie McKinnon, People Graduate

You don’t have to live in Leeds to access these careers. While corporate head offices and professional services are concentrated in Leeds, Bradford and York, operational, technical, and entry-level positions stretch across the entire county.
For instance:
- Northern is planning a massive recruitment drive for a brand-new train care centre opening in Shipley, while their customer service and operations roles touch every local station on the Yorkshire line.
- Morrisons embeds its specialised, skilled apprenticeships (such as their traditional butchery and fishmongery schemes) straight into local communities across rural and urban Yorkshire.
What to do next

Most structured graduate and apprenticeship schemes operate on an annual timeline. Applications typically open in the autumn and close in the winter for the following year’s intake. This means June through August is the ultimate preparation window. Here is how you can get ahead of the competition:
- Build Your CV Early: Don’t wait until September. Use the summer to complete virtual schemes like Channel 4’s 4Skills programme to give your application a distinct edge.
- Focus on Communication: As employers like Blacks and Morrisons highlight, firms are moving away from purely looking at top grades. They want a “can-do” attitude, teamwork, and people who can confidently converse with clients and colleagues.
- Look for “Always On” Roles: If you want to start earning or gaining business exposure immediately, entry-level transport presentation, hospitality, and retail positions accept applications year-round and require zero prior experience.
Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What qualifications do I need for a degree apprenticeship in Yorkshire?
Requirements vary by employer. For corporate schemes like Morrisons, they look primarily for a strong work ethic, teamwork skills, and a “can-do” attitude rather than just specific top marks. Many engineering or technical apprenticeships at First Bus or Northern prioritise problem-solving mindsets over extensive prior experience.
Can you really become a train driver at 18?
Yes. Thanks to recent industry rule changes, the minimum age to start a train driver or conductor apprenticeship with Northern is dropping to 18. Because the comprehensive training program takes roughly two years, young people will be fully qualified and driving trains by the time they are 20.
Are media jobs available in Yorkshire long-term?
Absolutely. Channel 4’s National HQ is permanently based in Leeds, and its 4Skills initiative explicitly partners with thriving independent Yorkshire production companies (like True North). This creates a sustainable, long-term creative ecosystem right here in the region.
