This Scenic Bus Route Weaves Through Some Of West Yorkshire’s Most Charming Towns

From canal-side strolls to secret beaches, the 590, 591 and 592 routes connect some of West Yorkshire’s best days out.

West Yorkshire is made for exploring, and with First Bus, it’s simple and great value. Hop on the 590, 591 or 592 and weave your way through Hebden Bridge, Todmorden and Halifax, passing canal paths, moorland views and charming town centres along the way. Here are our favourite places to hop off and explore.

Tuck into giant sandwiches at Saltas

Sandwich shop Saltas draws in crowds from far and wide for its New York-style subs, which come packed with seriously generous fillings. We love the chicken parm, served hot and stuffed with breaded chicken, Napoli sauce, mortadella, mozzarella and Grana Padano. It gets busy during peak times, but it’s well worth the queue.

Wander through woodland at Hardcastle Crags

Hebden Bridge is blessed with stunning scenery, and Hardcastle Crags is one of the best places to start. Spanning 400 acres of unspoilt woodland, with tumbling streams and impressive waterfalls along the way, it’s perfect for a weekend wander. At the heart of it all sits Gibson Mill, a fully sustainable, off-grid water mill.

Find it: Hardcastle Crags, Gibson Mill, Midgehole Road, Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, HX7 7AW. Get off the bus in Hebden Bridge and follow the Rochdale Canal for 25 to 30 minutes to find the site.

Sip craft beer at Vocation & Co

If you’re a beer lover, a stop at Vocation & Co is a must when visiting Hebden Bridge. Vocation Brewery’s taproom, you can work your way through fresh ales alongside burgers, chicken tenders and loaded fries. Our pick? A pint of Crush Hour with the Life & Death Burger, topped with jalapeños, onion rings and ale-infused hot sauce.

Discover a secret beach at Gaddings Dam

Did you know there’s a secret beach in West Yorkshire? Take a steep uphill walk from Todmorden and you’ll reach Gaddings Dam – a Victorian mill dam tucked away on the moors. It’s a popular spot for wild swimming, but we’d recommend staying out of the water and sticking to marked paths when exploring the area.

Find it: Gaddings Dam, Todmorden, West Yorkshire, OL14 7GB. Get off the bus in Todmorden then it’s a 30 to 40 minute uphill walk to reach the dam.

Go bargain hunting at Todmorden Market

Todmorden Market is the beating heart of the mill town. Set inside a Victorian glass-roofed hall, it’s packed with fresh produce, from artisan cheeses and olives to retro sweets and locally reared meat. Be sure to stop by the market café – serving more than 50 types of coffee, it’s the perfect place to pause and soak up the atmosphere.

Get a cracking brew at Morning Glory

Sitting proudly on Halifax Road, Morning Glory is a much-loved Todmorden café where brunch is the order of the day. They do a quality full English, but for us, the Turkish eggs are the star of the show. Served with grilled focaccia for scooping, they pair perfectly with an oat milk flat white – ideal for refuelling before your next stop.

Follow the Rochdale Canal

Running through the Calder Valley, the Rochdale Canal is one of the easiest ways to explore West Yorkshire on foot. Hop off in Hebden Bridge or Todmorden and join the towpath for a relaxed, waterside walk, with scenic routes in both directions. Whether you’re after a short stroll or a longer ramble, it’s a simple, scenic way to see more of the area.

Find it: The Rochdale Canal runs through Hebden Bridge and Todmorden.

Take a walk in Shibden Park

Once home to Halifax’s Anne Lister, Shibden Hall sits at the heart of Shibden Park, a Grade II-listed estate with plenty to explore. Alongside the historic hall, you’ll find a boating lake, play area, woodland trails and even a miniature railway. Don’t miss Cunnery Wood Local Nature Reserve, where winding paths lead you through cascades, pools and hidden garden tunnels.

Learn through play at Eureka!

A trip to Eureka! is a rite of passage for children in West Yorkshire. The National Children’s Museum is home to hundreds of hands-on exhibitions, designed to help children learn all about the human body, the working world and more. The best bit? Buy an admission ticket and you can return as many times as you like for a year.

Find it: Eureka! The National Children’s Museum, Discovery Road, Halifax, West Yorkshire, HX1 2NE. Get off the bus at Halifax Bus Station and it’s a short walk to the museum.

Marvel at the Grade I-listed Piece Hall

Built as a cloth hall in the late 18th century, the stunning Piece Hall is one of Halifax’s best places to spend a day out. It’s home to independent shops, bars and restaurants, where you can browse everything from art and homeware to books and vintage clothing. It also hosts a packed programme of live events, making it one of the most scenic venues in the region.
