From slow mornings to scenic country walks, Hewn Yorkshire is the perfect place for a proper reset.

If the idea of switching your phone off for a weekend fills you with dread, it might be a sign you’re overdue a break. Between constant notifications, endless scrolling and the pressure to be always online, it’s becoming harder and harder to switch off – even when you’re away.

That’s exactly what makes a stay at Hewn Yorkshire different. With little to no signal and no WiFi, it forces you to switch off and focus on the world around you. Here’s what a 48-hour digital detox actually looks like.

The first thing that hits you when you pull up to Hewn isn’t the setting itself, it’s the silence. There’s no traffic noise, no background hum – just open countryside and the constant trill of birdsong. It’s a bit of a shock to the system, but it makes you realise how much noise you’re usually taking in.

Take your time to unpack and settle into your new surroundings. Your home for the weekend is a cabin in the woods, complete with everything you need to switch off. Fully equipped kitchen? Check. En-suite shower room? Double check. There’s even a smart TV and DVD player if you really need a screen – but let’s be honest, that’s cheating.

But it’s outside where Hewn really comes into its own. Step out of your cabin and you’re straight into nature – there’s a fire pit ready to be lit, a swing grill for open-fire dinners, and a dining table for eating outdoors. And then there’s the Finnish wood-fired hot tub, heated and ready for your arrival.

It doesn’t take long before you settle into a new pace – slow mornings with a coffee, an evening dip as the air cools, and still, quiet surroundings that make it very easy to lose track of time. You could easily spend your entire weekend in and around the cabin.

Venture out, though, and you’ll find a whole world waiting to be explored. Take the woodland path from the quarry and the landscape opens up to a vast meadow, with views stretching as far east as the Cleveland Hills and westwards over to the Pennines. Pause with a book, have a wander or just spend some time doing very little.

Further afield, there’s no shortage of walks, taking you through woodland, past waterfalls and around medieval castles. Or you can head into nearby Richmond – a charming market town packed with pubs, restaurants and independent shops.

Nearby Mainsgill Farmshop is the perfect place to make a pitstop. You can pick up BBQ supplies and deli treats, or grab a bite in the tearoom before you head home for the evening.

As the evening draws in, you naturally gravitate back to the cabin. With no rush and no plans to stick to, time passes softly. Soak in the hot tub, relax on the terrace and spend a little longer outdoors than you normally would.

Cooking outdoors is one of life’s simple pleasures, and it becomes even more of an occasion at Hewn. Pour a drink, fire up the grill and take your time. With nothing but the crackle of the flames, you can let the evening unfold ahead of you.

When the fire burns low, it’s time to get nostalgic – each cabin comes with marshmallow toasting forks, so you can settle down, cosy up with a blanket and enjoy the last of the evening outdoors. Finish off with a late night dip, and it’s hard to think of a better way to end the day.

In the morning, there’s no alarm to worry about, so you can wake up naturally. Step out onto the terrace and ease into the day. An early morning hot tub with a coffee? It’s hard to resist.

There’s more Finnish wellness across the site, too. Hewn’s private woodland sauna sits overlooking the meadow – book it out for an hour or two and move between heat and cold, working up a sweat before stepping out into the fresh air and under the outdoor drench shower. It’s invigorating, and really brings you back to the present.

A visit to Hewn is the perfect excuse to do nothing at all. No plans, no scrolling, no pressure to fill the time. Just a slower way of life that’s surprisingly easy to settle into. And as for checking your phone? You’ll realise it’s a habit, not a necessity.
