Grazie

If you haven’t been to Grazie on Leopold Street yet, let this be your sign. It’s an independent Southern Italian spot from Vito Vernia who hails from Puglia, Italy – and you can feel that sunshine-and-sea influence the second you walk in. The real showstopper here is their in-house Pasta Lab, where fresh pasta is made every single morning right in front of you. We’re talking hand-rolled shapes, ribbons cut on specialist machines, and plates of pasta that taste like they’ve come straight from nonna’s kitchen.

The menu leans into Southern Italian comfort but isn’t afraid to have a little fun. Expect rich, slow-cooked meats, beautifully fresh seafood, and vibrant veggie/vegan dishes that never feel like an afterthought. The cocktails are playful and the wine list is worth taking your time over – especially the bottles sourced from the owners’ own vineyard back in Puglia.

Good for: Fresh pasta dates, lively catch-ups and anyone craving a proper taste of Southern Italy in the middle of Sheffield.
When it’s open: 12 to 9:30pm Monday to Thursday, and 12pm to 10pm Friday and Saturday. Closed Sunday.
Find it: Grazie, 9 Leopold Street, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S1 2GY.

Borgo Antica Osteria

A selection of Italian dishes on a table

If you love the idea of a proper neighbourhood Italian – the kind where the table’s always full and no one’s in a rush to leave – then Borgo needs to be on your list. Created by Vito & Giacinto (the team behind Grazie, Paesani and La Bottega), it’s all about classic regional Italian cooking done right. Think fresh pasta made for twirling, generous sharing plates, seasonal specials that change with the mood of the kitchen, and the sort of dishes that are built for passing round the table with a glass (or two) of something good.

Upstairs, there’s a cocktail lounge and event space that makes it just as perfect for big birthday dinners as it is for spontaneous Friday night catch-ups. It’s warm, a little bit loud, and properly welcoming – S11’s answer to a tiny Italian village eatery that will have you planning your next visit as soon as you leave.

Good for: Big family get-togethers, group celebrations and classic Italian comfort in a buzzy neighbourhood setting.
When it’s open: 5pm to 10pm Monday to Thursday, and 12pm to 10pm Friday to Sunday.
Find it: Borgo Antica Osteria, 139-141 Oakbrook Road, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S11 7EB.

Vero Gusto

Vero Gusto is one of those Italian spots that feels like you’ve been let in on a delicious secret. Tucked away on Norfolk Row, it’s a proper family-run restaurant, led by chef Ester (originally from Naples) in the kitchen and Saverio in charge of the wine list – and you can taste that authenticity. The menu skips the pizza place vibe and instead focuses on refined Italian classics, like the ravioli agli scampi, which langoustine, grilled king prawns, bisque and creamy orange sauce – with all the seafood being fresh and carefully sourced.

What really sets it apart is how personal the whole place feels. The dishes are crafted with care from quality ingredients, the wine selection is one of the most thoughtful in South Yorkshire, and the service has that warm, heartfelt touch you only get from a genuine independent. It’s little surprise that people travel from far and wide – including celebrities – to enjoy this exquisite culinary experience.

Good for: Special dinners, classy Italian classics and heartfelt hospitality with a side of standout wine.
When it’s open: 11:30am to 10:30pm Wednesday to Saturday. Closed Sunday to Tuesday.
Find it: Vero Gusto, 12 Norfolk Row, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S1 2PA.

Vito’s

If you’re after classic, home-comfort Italian with that old-school trattoria feel, Vito’s is a bit of a local legend. This family-run favourite has been serving up proper Italian fare for decades, and the moment you walk in, you get that cosy, welcoming vibe everyone raves about. The menu is all about hearty, straightforward dishes done right – from rich spaghetti carbonara and penne all’Amatriciana to standout plates like linguine with swordfish and indulgent lobster ravioli. There’s pizza too if you’re in the mood for something a little more laid-back.

They deliver big on that winning combination of warming dishes, a thoughtful wine list and a friendly team (often led by Vito himself) who make you feel like you’re sitting down for dinner with family. Whether it’s polpette in spicy tomato sauce, creamy truffle risotto or a panna cotta to finish, you’ll be walking out with a full belly and a big smile.

Good for: Classic Italian comfort meals, family dinners and relaxed date nights with wines to match.
When it’s open: 5pm to 9:30pm Tuesday to Thursday and Sunday, and 5pm to 10pm Friday and Saturday. Closed Monday.
Find it: Vito’s, 284 South Road, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S6 3TE.

If you’re wandering down Leopold Street and fancy something a little different from the usual Italian fare, La Bottega will surprise you in the best way. It’s a beautifully curated Italian café, wine bar and restaurant all in one – part deli, part relaxed lunch hangout, part evening dinner destination. It boasts a real focus on seasonal dishes that lean into authentic Italian flavours. You might start with a bruschetta or burrata, move onto something like ruffle mushroom tagliatelle or a perfectly seared sea bass special, paired wonderfully with a glass of vino.

You can take your time and unwind here, as La Bottega never feels rushed or fussy. There’s a lovely dose of cosy, rustic charm with city centre convenience that makes it a great pick for casual lunches and relaxed dinners alike. The wine list is seriously good too, and the whole place radiates that “come sit for a bit” vibe that makes meals feel like an occasion.

Good for: Casual lunch dates, sharing plates with friends and wine lovers looking for somewhere warm and welcoming.
When it’s open: 12pm to 9pm Tuesday and Wednesday, 12pm to 9:15pm Thursday, and 12pm to 9:30pm Friday and Saturday. Closed Sunday and Monday.
Find it: La Bottega, 1-3 Leopold Street, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S1 2GY.

Grappa

A selection of Italian dishes on a table including pizza and pastas

Blending relaxed Italian dining with a bustling bar atmosphere, Grappa on Glossop Road is worth a visit. It’s a two-storey Italian restaurant and bar where rustic meets refined – from hand-stretched Neapolitan pizzas fired in a Gianni Acunto oven to moreish handmade pastas, classic cicchetti like crispy arancini di riso and deep-fried calamari, plus seafood and slow-cooked meats that feel proper Italian. You can pair your food with one of the UK’s largest selections of grappa – a fragrant, grape-based Italian brandy – or you can opt for a crafted cocktail or Italian wine.

It’s an ideal pick for any occasion, with a lively energy that’s casual enough for pizza night with friends, but polished enough for special evening celebrations. There are tasting menus with wine pairings if you’re after something a bit more elevated, plus set menus on weeknights that make foodie favourites feel like a great deal.

Good for: Pizza and pasta nights with friends, cocktails & grappa with dinner, and lively weekend vibes.
When it’s open: 5pm to 11pm Wednesday and Thursday, 4pm to 11:30pm Friday, 12pm to 2am Saturday, and 2pm to 9pm Sunday. Closed on Monday and Tuesday.
