From independent shops and delicious food to scenic walks and heritage attractions, there’s always more to discover in Barnsley.

Whether you’re planning a social weekend, a family adventure or a slower countryside escape, there’s a side of Barnsley to suit every kind of stay.

Home to a wealth of independent shops, restaurants and bars, Barnsley is one of South Yorkshire’s hidden gems. Throw in scenic countryside and stellar heritage attractions, and you’ve got all the ingredients for a weekend getaway to remember. Here are three itineraries to follow next time you’re visiting the area.

For cocktails, culture and late-night plans

For shopping, cocktails and culture without the crowds, Barnsley makes a brilliant Yorkshire mini break. Hop off the train and you’re less than a five-minute walk from The Glass Works – the beating heart of the town centre. Browse the shops, explore the historic Barnsley Market and reward yourself with cocktails at The Botanist.

From there, wander through the Victorian Arcade – one of Barnsley’s most distinctive shopping streets. With its cobbled paving, indie stores and cosy micro-pubs, it feels like a town within a town. We love the Jolly Tap, home to Jolly Boys Brewery and a fine spot to enjoy a pint or two.

When it’s time to refuel, head to Favela. This rodizio-style restaurant serves up Brazilian grilled meats alongside an impressive gourmet salad bar. It’s all you can eat, so come hungry.

Round off the evening with a visit to Lamproom Theatre, an intimate venue where live music and comedy sits alongside touring productions and community shows. Rather than rushing for the last train home, make a night of it with an overnight stay at Ibis Styles, just a 10-minute taxi from town and ideally located for a social weekend in Barnsley.

Ideal for: Friends, couples and city break seekers.
First stop: The Glass Works, Barnsley, South Yorkshire, S70 1GW.
Food & drink: Jolly Tap and Favela.
Where to stay: Ibis Styles, Whinby Road, Dodworth, Barnsley, South Yorkshire, S75 3TX.

Barnsley has plenty to offer families, and Cannon Hall Farm is the perfect place to kick off a kid-friendly weekend. This working farm is home to a whole host of curious critters, from ferrets and meerkats to prairie dogs and shire horses.

You can continue the adventure over at C-Made Outdoors – an adrenaline-fuelled activity centre where kids young and old can blow off steam. From archery and axe throwing to bushcraft and quad biking, there’s something for all ages and abilities.

From there, it’s a short trip down the road to The Bells Bar & Kitchen for some well-earned grub. This cosy Yorkshire pub has everything you need for a family dinner, with tapas and hearty pub classics for the grown-ups and a dedicated kids’ menu for younger diners.

When it comes to staying the night, The Cottage Silkstone is a charming detached holiday home nestled on the edge of the Pennines. Sleeping up to five across three bedrooms, it’s ready-made for extending your trip and setting you up for more countryside adventures the following day. It’s dog-friendly too, so the whole family can come along.

Ideal for: Families with children under 14.
First stop: Cannon Hall Farm, Bark House Lane, Cawthorne, Barnsley, South Yorkshire, S75 4AT.
Food & drink: The Bells Bar and Kitchen.

If your ideal weekend involves scenic walks, cosy pubs and the chance to properly slow down, Barnsley has plenty to offer. Worsbrough Mill Country Park is the perfect place to start, combining a 240-acre nature reserve with a historic water mill. Wander around the reservoir, explore woodland pathways and meadows, or head further afield along the Trans Pennine Trail.

Just a short drive away, Rob Royd Farm Shop is a must-visit for food lovers. Stocked with farm-reared meat, fresh produce and deli treats from local suppliers, you’re bound to leave with more than you planned. There’s a café on site too, making it an ideal stop for coffee and cake after a morning outdoors.

When evening rolls around, take a trip to The Keys in Hoyland. This independent gastropub pairs locally sourced food with real ales, handcrafted cocktails and regular live entertainment. Their famous hanging kebabs are well worth ordering, especially with a portion of salt and pepper fries.

Round off the trip with an overnight stay at Tankersley Manor, a charming spa hotel set within a former 17th-century farmhouse. Surrounded by tranquil woodland, it’s the perfect base for a relaxed countryside escape. Finish with a dip in the indoor pool or a morning spa session, and you’ll leave feeling completely refreshed.

Ideal for: Anyone looking for a slower-paced country escape.
