From truffle crisps and spell kits to second hand books and old school sweets – these are the shops you need to visit in Haworth.
Located on the Pennines, Haworth is rich in heritage and spirit, offering an old-world Yorkshire charm to visitors, who flock to enjoy a little slice of Brontë-inspired life.
This picture-perfect West Yorkshire town is the perfect place for a spot of shopping, and we know exactly where to go. Haworth Main Street, famous for its steep, cobbled pathway, allows visitors to tread the well-beaten path to a whole host of independent shops that promise to excite and delight.
Lighthouse Lane

Husband and wife dream team, Katie and Howard Shelmerdine, run this design-led gift shop in Haworth. Called Lighthouse Lane, it’s home to a vast array of gifts, art and homeware alongside a clothing apparel line and artwork, either made in-house or sourced with love.
Launched in 2015, it’s one of three shops under the Lighthouse Lane umbrella that boasts Howard’s quirky Yorkshire ‘iWay Code’ and a selection of Katie’s stunning artwork. There’s also a rainbow-coloured selection of French soap, hand-painted ceramics and cards a-plenty.
It’s the kind of shop you can lose an hour in as you ponder shelves of crocheted cacti, hand-painted vases and lemon drizzle candles from the nearby Yorkshire Candle Company. It’s all beautifully displayed with consideration and care, perfect for gifting or simply a souvenir of your stay.
The Yorkshire-focused items on sale (we need the ‘what the chuff is going on’ notepad for our burgeoning to-do-lists!) and the ‘Chuffin Freezing’ and ‘Bit Nippy’ hats might come in handy this season. We also adore that there’s a section of artwork dedicated to Katie’s sketches and paintings.

Oh La La, The Original Brontë Stationery Store

© Copyright Yorkshire-List 2024
This cute, quirky Haworth shop is the original Brontë stationery store, with the claim to fame that the Brontë sisters purchased their paper there before penning their famous novels.
The store, which was a grocer and tea merchant before it became a stationer, was chosen by Charlotte Brontë and her publisher to sell copies of her books, Jayne Eyre, Shirley and Villette. The owner is even said to have walked to Halifax for half a ream of paper for her! A true literary labour of love.
It’s now owned by Pamela Howorth, a woman who (in our experience at least) is always smiling. Alongside stationery, it also offers unique literary gifts for bookish souls as well as art by local artists, all displayed in antique cabinets.
With a Mary Poppins art installation on the wall outside, guests are promised a quirky adventure from the get-go and won’t be disappointed. So whether you want a Shakespeare-themed pencil case, a Harry Potter lapel pin or a pocket-sized Jane Ayre Map, you’ve come to the right place.

And Chocolate

Owned by Simon Packham since 2012, And Chocolate offers exquisite artisan handmade choccies from Belgium and the UK. The chocolate-coloured storefront leads into the chocolate-scented shop with a sign encouraging you to ‘think inside the box’.
Simon is as well known as his chocolate, offering samples to try before you buy, as well an in-depth knowledge and passion for what he does (he left his 25-year career in IT to pursue his love of chocolate). It’s no wonder people travel far and wide for their confectionary.
There are vegan and gluten-free options, with allergies noted under each item, and while there’s a huge range of boxed chocolates to buy, you can also pick up handmade treats, including five different flavours of Turkish Delight, all wrapped up in see-through bags to tempt you in.
Kids are encouraged to be ‘shopkeepers’ to allow parents to take their time choosing and perusing. The only problem is how you’ll resist buying everything you see – and how long you’ll be able to keep them sealed after you leave (think minutes, not hours).
And Chocolate, 54 Main Street, Haworth, Keighley, West Yorkshire, BD22 8DP.
Wave of Nostalgia

Set amongst the cobbles of Haworth Main Street is this must-see, multi-award-winning independent bookshop. Launched by owner (and women’s champion) Diane Park in 2013, it sets out to celebrate and inspire women.
Inspired by the book ‘Is It Just Me’ by Miranda Hart (which Diane tells us encouraged her to follow her dreams) the focus is aptly placed on fiction and non-fiction by women, with topics including the suffragettes, feminists, LGBT, well-being and the environment.
This small but mighty store (check out the bespoke suffragette painting in the window) also sells handmade clothing, designed and made by Diane in her first-floor workroom. There are also t-shirts and gifts made by other inspiring women from across the local area and beyond.
The business is laser-focused on sustainability, and the children’s toy selection (yes, we’re looking at you Maileg mice) is divine. Alongside this, Diane hosts events and book signings as well as creative writing and poetry workshops.

Sian Alison Designs

This small but perfectly formed shop in Haworth has bags of charm – quite literally, and is as serendipitous as it is style-focused.
Opened by Sian Alison and her equally bag-and-jewellery-obsessed mum in 2017, the shop gave her opportunity to launch her own venture (something she had always considered a ‘pipe dream’) to move with her husband from the outskirts of the town to where they now live, above the shop.
Cut to today and the store sells a curated (and sweet shop-like display) of Italian leather delights sourced from Florence, as well as bags handmade in the UK. They also have statement jewellery, scarves, leather belts and accessories. Keep your eyes peeled for the couple’s cute Cockapoo, Bear, surveying the goods too.
We love their range of bright and beautiful Italian leather camera bags and butter-soft Italian backpacks – both would make the perfect travel companion. They sometimes even stock ‘Soruka’ bags, designed in Barcelona using leather that would otherwise go into landfill.

Cabinet of Curiosities

This delightful Victorian-era apothecary does exactly what it says on the tin, making and stocking a wide range of unusual gifts to excite and delight. It’s a labour of love for its founders Caroline and Patricia Rose, who for almost 30 years, have invited shoppers in to a true treasure-seeker’s paradise.
Restored to its former glory as a Victorian druggist and apothecary, the store is filled with magnificent antique fittings salvaged from chemists, grocery shops and museums, then brought beautifully back to life.
Blended oils, creams and therapeutic bath powders are offered alongside artisan (and beautifully designed) soy-free wax candles, such as hedgerow, and lemongrass and ginger, kept under cloches, allowing you to choose your favourite fragrance with ease. Brontë sister books also feature.
We love the prettily packaged store-front-designed gift boxes. They house a stunning secret, as once the contents are removed, the box becomes a magical lantern, lighting up from within. The shop’s popular mustard bath salts, made to a traditional recipe, are perfect for soothing muscles too.

Hatchard and Daughters

If you’re a bookworm then you’ll love a little nosy around this quaint blue-fronted bookstore in the heart of Haworth Main Street. Established in 1988 by Mary Hatchard, her heritage book store offers a treasure trove of second-hand tomes (we love the rare and signed editions section).
Step inside, take a moment to enjoy that indescribable old book smell, then begin to browse. Their collection will take you from the poems of Scott and Tennyson to iconic children’s books – we spied The Wind in the Willows and The Railway Children on our visit, both childhood favourites.
The Brontës do, of course, get due attention. And you can learn more about the local attractions and history here too. But the beauty of Hatchard and Daughters is the fact that you’ll find something different on the shelves every time you visit.
The service is second to none here. Mary (and her daughter Amy) have a wealth of knowledge to help you find exactly what you’re looking for. The atmosphere is inviting (and exciting) making it the perfect spot to while away an hour, just don’t expect to leave empty handed.
Hatchard and Daughters, 91 Main St, Haworth, Keighley, West Yorkshire, BD22 8DA.
The Peculiar Shop
Haunted dolls, apothecary bottles and stuffed crows – we don’t need to spell it out, the clue is in the name of this popular Haworth store. The Peculiar Shop is one of the more magical finds in this quaint little town.
The quirky and unusual collection – we’re looking at you mummified fairies, taxidermy mice and haunted twin dolls Molly and Polly – make this a must visit, whether you’re magically inclined or simply curious. Owner Winter has created a safe space, where you can ask questions and experiment.
As for the collection itself, it’s vast. You can buy everything from tarot cards to candles, protection charms to crystal pendants, and there really is a new surprise around every corner.
There’s a selection of sage sticks to ensure every space is free from negative vibes, while spell kits can be made to order. Herbs are sold by the scoop (including lavender flowers and mugwort) making a lovely addition to this quirky, marvellously magical emporium.

Haworth Whole Foods

This is one of the finest shops in Haworth, dedicated to sourcing unique finds that are otherwise hard to find! We’re talking Torres Truffle crisps, Fabbri Amarena Cherries in syrup and Coco Chocolatier.
Those looking for sustenance during a walk around the town might be enticed by the illuminated ‘hot pasties’ sign in the window (referencing the vegan Pennine Pasties the locals love), but once inside there’s much more to whet your organic-fuelled appetite in this beloved Haworth food shop.
Owned by Dagmar Robertson (who took over from previous owner Sally Hayes), Haworth Whole Foods promises a veritable feast of local ethical, organic and fairtrade produce, including organic bread, seasonal fruit and veg, as well as carefully curated personal care products.
Coffee lovers will be pleased to discover that they serve North Star coffee, from the B Corp-certified speciality coffee roasters in Leeds, while foodies should look our for their collabs, the most recent of which saw them teaming up with The Pizza Ghost, which makes tiny batch, handmade pizzas.

Mrs Beightons Sweet Shop

© Copyright Yorkshire-List 2024
This family-run, vintage-style sweet shop (launched 25 years ago by Mrs Beighton herself), is a nostalgic nod to days gone by, offering visitors a delightful choice of more than 500 sweets and chocolates.
It’s now owned by Tom and Tamsin Heys, who took over from Alan and Wendy Breeze when they retired earlier this year, but rest assured, they’ve all stayed true to Mrs Beighton’s vision. In fact, this little Haworth Main Street Store now stocks over 50 varieties of liquorice and 10 flavours of bonbons.
Their slogan is ‘all our sweets now off ration’, so expect jars of sold-by-weight treats, alongside old-school and utterly gift-worthy tins and boxes. Bestsellers (including raspberry bonbons, midget gems with liquorice in, sherbet lemons and pear drops) offer a birds-eye view of days gone by.
But time hasn’t stood completely still. They now have a tantalising selection of sugar-free, gluten-free and gelatine-free options, as well as a full vegan selection, with jars labelled accordingly. So prepare to step off the cobbled streets and into a wonderland of old school and new age delights.
