Sheffield is blessed with an incredible independent coffee shop scene – and these are the spots we find ourselves going back to again and again.

Whether you’re after a perfectly pulled flat white, an eye-opening espresso, or a refreshing cold brew, there’s something here to satisfy every coffee craving. With so many standout spots across the Steel City, though, it can be tricky to know where to start, so we’ve rounded up some of our favourites. From cosy, character-filled cafés to expert roasteries, these Sheffield independents serve seriously good coffee with plenty of personality to match.

Steamyard

Nestled away on a courtyard in Division Street is one of Sheffield’s most loved coffee shops. Steamyard strikes a lovely balance between laid-back and lively, with rustic, industrial touches and plenty of indoor and outdoor spots to perch with a drink in hand. It’s a big hit with locals, who love it for its convenient city centre location and easygoing atmosphere.

When it comes to the menu, Steamyard serves up some seriously good brews that will keep you coming back for more. They’re best enjoyed alongside their impressive array of baked goods, sweet treats, bagels and sandwiches. Every visit has us whipping out our camera to show off our orders. From creamy flat whites to generous jam-filled cronuts, this place is hard to resist.

Coffee Lab

There’s a science to a great brew and Coffee Lab has cracked it. This sleek, modern spot on Surrey Street makes for a wonderful city-centre retreat, where the interiors are elegant, the atmosphere relaxed, and the coffee always focused on quality and getting the brewing process spot on every time.

Coffee Lab’s drinks list is all about letting great beans shine, with delicious single-origin pours and speciality coffees tailored just how you like them, whether you’re an espresso aficionado or a fan of filter. There’s also a tempting selection of sweet treats, pastries and light bites to pair with your cup – think cakes and pancakes that add some extra pep into your morning.

Café No 9

Café No 9 brings a beautiful blend of brews and tunes to Nether Edge. Inside, it’s all wood-lined walls, artwork, dangling plants, and a wonderfully welcoming atmosphere. It’s the kind of place you pop in for a quick coffee and end up spending the entire afternoon in, chatting, unwinding and making new friends.

A true local favourite, Café No 9 has been a staple of the community since 1995. Alongside their carefully made espresso-based coffees, you’ll find homemade cakes, simple brunch plates and plenty of sweet treats to tempt you at the counter. With live music evenings adding to the charm, it’s one of those cosy Sheffield spots that serves up all the right ingredients with plenty of style.

Dysh Coffee & Kitchen

Sitting pretty on Ecclesall Road, Dysh is a welcoming spot with a relaxed neighbourhood feel. The interior is simple and stylish, boasting a lovely little sun terrace at the back that comes into its own on brighter days. It’s an effortlessly comfortable space, inviting you in to enjoy a relaxed brunch, afternoon tea, or just people watching with a warm drink in hand.

Coffee is a big part of the offering here, with expertly brewed espresso-based drinks at the heart of the menu. The food is just as sublime, with generous brunch plates, seasonal dishes and homemade cakes on the counter – including their much-loved custard tart which comes highly recommended by us. With vegan and gluten-free options that are no afterthought, there’s something for everyone here.

Marmadukes

A true Sheffield coffee hero, Marmadukes has built a devoted following, with three locations across the city. Since opening its original café in 2012, the team have become known for thoughtful spaces and a real focus on quality. Each spot has its own personality – from the charming cobbled setting of the original townhouse café to the bright, modern feel of the newer sites.

Of course, Marmadukes knows how to serve a great brew too, with carefully sourced specialty beans alongside a food menu built around excellent produce. Expect beautifully baked sourdough, pastries and cakes made at their own bakery, plus seasonal breakfast, brunch and lunch dishes that champion simple, honest ingredients. It’s the kind of place that showcases just why Sheffield’s independent coffee scene is so special.

May’s Coffee & Tea

If you like your coffee served with bags of character, May’s Coffee & Tea is the place for you. The space is simple but full of charm, with natural light, handmade wooden tables and benches crafted by a local joiner. It sits on Broad Lane, just outside the busiest parts of the city centre, which adds to the relaxed, slightly tucked-away atmosphere.

They don’t skimp on the menu either, with coffee beans supplied by local roasters, speciality Chinese teas and unique beverage creations. One standout is their Yuzu Espresso Tonic – a refreshing, citrusy take on iced coffee. Alongside the brews, you’ll find sweet treats, bagels and light bites that taste as good as they look. Plus, dogs are very welcome here, and if you’re lucky, you might even meet May herself – the adorable little corgi who takes pride of place on the café’s logo.

Tamper Coffee

Right in the heart of Sheffield’s Devonshire Quarter, Tamper Coffee has quietly become a favourite with locals who know their beans. The interior is stylish and relaxed, with warm tones, tiled details and plenty of natural light that gives the whole place a fresh, uncluttered feel. Walk in and it immediately feels comfortable, with a friendly hum and the unmistakable smell of well‑made coffee in the air.

Tamper serves expertly pulled espresso drinks alongside thoughtfully prepared filter coffee, showcasing beans roasted both locally and from well‑regarded producers further afield. Complementing the drinks menu are freshly baked pastries, seasonal cakes and a selection of simple, well‑crafted brunch plates that will leave you satisfied. With a strong focus on quality and flavour, it’s a great stop for anyone who loves their coffee done right.

Kilnfolk Coffee

Kilnfolk Coffee has quickly become one of Sheffield’s most talked-about independent. It’s a calm and considered café, with locally made pottery and homewares on display that echo its connection to the adjacent ceramics studio. Bright, welcoming and full of thoughtful touches, it’s a spot where every detail shows the love that has gone into it.

Coffee at Kilnfolk covers a range of speciality brews, from expertly crafted cortados to fantastically made flat whites, with beans being selected from top roasters. Everything is served with care, often in their signature locally made ceramics, giving each cup an extra dash of personality. It’s the kind of café that leaves a lasting impression for the quality of what’s in your cup and the atmosphere that surrounds it.
