S1 Artspace and Sheffield Hallam University are collaborating on an exciting new chapter for the arts in Sheffield – and now the public is being invited to help shape its future.

The news that S1 Artspace have purchased what was once the Yorkshire Bank Chambers in Sheffield’s Fitzalan Square marked a major step forward for contemporary arts in the city. With a public consultation and exhibition taking place on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th October 2025, residents are being invited inside the historic building for the first time in over a decade to view the space and have their say on the proposed transformation.

A new home for Sheffield’s creative community

S1 Artspace is one of the city’s most vibrant creative organisations, a non-profit with a stellar track record of supporting artists, hosting exhibitions and putting on screenings and events since it was founded by Sheffield Hallam students and staff in 1995. It has, however, had recent issues with its base.

Plans for their HQ in Park Hill were mothballed due to the financial hangover from the pandemic, so securing a permanent home came as fabulous news. Louise Hutchinson, Project Director, told us, “it ensures our long-term commitment to supporting local artists and bringing world-class art to Sheffield”.

From bank to cultural landmark

The new home has a rich history, having been built in 1871 on the corner of Haymarket and Commercial Street. It went on to become the site of the Sheffield Stock Exchange, eventually transforming into a branch of Yorkshire Bank, which closed in 2017, leaving the site vacant.

So, what will be inside? Initial designs by architects Carmody Groarke will sensitively restore and repurpose the Grade II-listed building as S1 Artspace’s first permanent home, complete with two floors of public galleries, artist studios and creative workspaces, a gallery shop showcasing local makers and an independent basement bar.

Help shape the future

The public consultation offers a unique way for Sheffield residents, artists and heritage enthusiasts to step inside the building, see its historic features, view the architects’ plans and a 3D model, and share feedback on the proposals. Input gathered will be used to help shape the final designs ahead of a planning application submission to Sheffield City Council in early 2026.

Louise Hutchinson put it best: “this isn’t just our project – it’s Sheffield’s. We want people who live, work and create here to be part of shaping what happens next. Whether you’re an artist, a local resident, someone who loves the city’s heritage or you’re just curious about Castlegate, we’d love you to come along, see the plans and tell us what you think.”

The public consultation will take place from 11am to 3pm on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th October 2025 at the former Yorkshire Bank, 2 Haymarket, Castlegate, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S1 2AT. The consultation is free and there’s no need to book.
