It’s a feast for the farmyard senses.

Fancy grabbing fruit, meat and veg from the county’s best producers?

From hand-reared herds and sustainable, charitable thinking to locally sourced seasonal produce and artisan treats, there’s something for everyone in our round-up of the best farm shops in Yorkshire.

Fodder, Harrogate

Fodder sells the wares of a whopping 430 local producers, which means there’s an unparalleled array. The team regularly visits local suppliers to curate a selection of the best in taste, quality and animal welfare standards – and 85% of their products are from right here in Yorkshire.

There’s a butcher (with pork sourced from Anna’s Happy Trotters and beef from the Cowling family farm, among others), a deli with 67 cheeses (from creameries like Shepherd Purse Cheese in Thirsk and Wensleydale Creamery in Hawes), a bustling café welcoming all ages, and an outside ‘Fodder on the Hoof’, for takeaways from a shiny silver airstream.

It’s also the only farm shop in Yorkshire and the UK that donates 100% of profits to a farming charity. That means that every joint of meat, cup of coffee or loaf of bread bought helps support the agricultural industry, from free educational trips to health checks for farmers that could save lives.

Yolk Farm, York

A big shelf of farm-fresh strawberries surrounded by lettuce, carrots and beetroot

Yolk Farm is the cracking brainchild of two confessed egg geeks – third-generation pig farmer Ben and his author wife Emma – with a mission to reconnect the public with real food, fresh from the farm.

Eggs from the farm’s 500 happy hens are served in its egg restaurant, and the flock can be seen roaming carefree. There are four baby pygmy goats and three little piggies (‘zero waste warriors’ who eat fruit and veg unsuitable for human consumption). Kids can watch them devour food en route to devouring their own.

This Yorkshire farm shop sells still-warm eggs and own-brand produce alongside seasonal fruit and veg. There’s also a ‘Yard at Yolk’ area for kids to free range, an old repurposed chicken barn with a giant sandpit, egg collecting station and trike park, while a veggie garden and activity sheets teach kids about creatures helping nurture the farm.

This award-winning, family-run Yorkshire farm shop – launched by the Machin family in 2004 – believes in fewer food miles and more farm yards. The thriving destination farm shop and café on the outskirts of York is open seven days a week and welcomes families and four-legged friends of the canine variety.

Its 28 acres of farmland is used to grow farm-shop produce and seasonal pick-your-own offerings (including pumpkins and strawberries). The farm shop in Yorkshire allows local and artisan producers to showcase their offerings, with only a handful of high-quality ones used for its meat, poultry and fish selection.

The café explodes with seasonal produce throughout the year, with produce utilised in the kitchen and bakery. There’s also a fresh Jersey milk machine from Grey Ley’s Dairy farm in Elvington. Milk from their jersey herd is harvested, gently pasteurised and sent straight from the farm into the on-site vending machine. You ‘herd’ it here first!

This farm shop in Yorkshire is owned by the Copley family, who have been farming for more than 140 years. Provenance is key, as is showcasing British agriculture and the benefits of the British countryside. Moo-vellous.

Powered by passion, it has an impressive 16 awards (including the best farm shop in Great Britain), selling more than 16,000 litres of milk a year, with over 87,000 free-range eggs eaten in its café annually. One of the best farm shops in Yorkshire, it sells homegrown fruit and hosts a Tulip Festival in springtime.

We also adore the private Arctic cabins. Called The Nests, they boast a central log burner and music system and are the perfect spot to enjoy homemade afternoon tea. You can also grab a gelato while you’re there, made on-site using Yorkshire Milk and Italian methodology. Bellissimo!

Weeton’s, Harrogate

Weetons’ latest flagship outpost on Leeds Road joins its original venue on West Park in Harrogate. The stunning wooden-clad, 15,000m2 building is one of the best farm shops in Yorkshire, with a food hall and home and garden store selling an array of locally sourced goodies.

There’s a gloriously impressive nursery and horticultural offering outside with stunning floral displays on entry. The Food Hall and Restaurants showcase the finest ingredients from local independent suppliers and farms, ensuring a fresh, farm-to-fork experience (try the Wagyu Beef Burger if you’re there).

Terraces give views of Crimple Valley and its Home + Garden store brims with 2,500 pieces from a host of suppliers. The array of artisan produce is impressive (the homemade Scotch Eggs with runny yolks are a fave). We love that you can sit and eat from different food hall offerings too, while in-house butchers will advise on how to prepare meat perfectly.

Cannon Hall Farm, Barnsley

This multi-award-winning family business opened in 1989. Owned by the Nicholson family, it’s home to three restaurants, a farm shop, and a visitor attraction committed to high-quality farming practices. It’s also packed with animals, a playground and a tube maze.

We love its Instagram, where farmers Rob and Dave keep us informed on all things farmyard (including adorable new arrivals and the aptly-named, floppy-haired Jon Bon Pony!). It also offers VIP animal experiences, including feeding the farm’s meerkats and bottle-feeding a lamb.

It lovingly produces beef, pork and lamb and manufactures sausages and bacon reared metres away and sold via its farm shop (and online offering shop.cannonhallfarm.co.uk for countrywide delivery). It was voted best farm shop in the UK twice and is the official host farm for Channel Five’s Springtime on The Farm and Winter on The Farm.

Townend Farm Shop, Skipton

A self full of locally made produce at Townend Farm Shop

This family-run (and Tom Kerridge-approved) farm shop in Yorkshire boasts locally sourced, seasonal produce. In 2022, it featured on ‘Top of the Shop’ with Tom Kerridge on BBC, where food producers tested produce on Malhamdale locals. Tom presented with judges Nisha Katona and Alison Swan Parente – with a little help from shopkeeper Chris!

Its cosy tea room offers stunning views of Malhamdale and Malham Cove. All produce is fresh, local and full of flavour. The farm rears grass-fed lamb, traditional-breed cattle and rare-breed pork, and its on-farm butchery produces traditional sausages, cured meats and award-winning charcuterie and salumi, stocked in the farm shop.

Its butchery, salumi and charcuterie courses, held on-site, are perfect if you’re looking to impress your friends. Try The Italian Salumi Day to immerse yourself in the art of the norcini (‘pork butcher’ in Italian).

Hinchliffes, Huddersfield

Hinchliffes has almost a century of experience, hatching in the 1920s to make it Britain’s oldest farm shop. Its fervour for farming means the focus is always on its superb herds, while its egg business produces almost one million hens yearly.

This is one of the best farm shops in Yorkshire and alongside deli delights and a florist, offers exclusive wines of the month not likely to be found in supermarkets or other local retailers. (We loved October’s red recommendation of the Riva Leone Barbera.)

The business – which bounced back after a fire in 2010 – has an in-house bakery, while flocks of hens lay the freshest eggs. Butchers offer beef from its herd, hung for 28 days, butchered and trimmed on-site by fourth-generation butchers. It also offers a handy home delivery service to locals.
