With its vibrant mix of heritage, culture, amenities and attractions, it’s no wonder that York is such a sought-after city for buyers.

Whether you’re looking to settle down or seeking a wise property investment, York is an excellent choice. It’s widely regarded as one of the best places to live in the county, thanks to its rich history, stable economy, array of attractions and strong sense of community. But where should you look to buy? Here are some of our top picks for desirable areas in and around York.

Bishophill

With its picturesque rows of period terrace properties, it’s not hard to see why this is such a popular area of York. Bishophill benefits from an enviable location within the historic city walls, offering excellent accessibility to the city centre.

Residents here can get away from the hustle and bustle of the centre, while also enjoying great local amenities, with shops, bars and cafes all within easy reach. Add in a close-knit community, friendly atmosphere and green spaces and you have an ideal place to live for families and young professionals alike.

Micklegate

Micklegate is hailed as one of York’s up-and-coming neighbourhoods, in no small part thanks to its beautiful balance of laidback community atmosphere with convenient city centre access. Found just south of the centre, it’s in close proximity to the train station, with good transport links making travel a breeze.

The area also boasts its own selection of independent businesses, delicious eateries, bars and boutiques. This, along with a buzzing social scene, has made Micklegate an attractive prospect for many creatives and young professionals looking to enjoy the best the city has to offer.

Fulford

Fulford has bags of charm. For starters, it’s stunning, with scenic views taking in open, green spaces like Fulford Ings Park & Gardens, with riverside walks courtesy of the River Ouse. It’s also where you’ll find inviting pubs and eateries, alongside attractions like the historic Fulford Battlefield and the nearby retail haven of York Designer Outlet.

It’s an area that truly gives you the best of both worlds – with easy access to all the city centre offers, but away from the hustle and bustle. There’s a range of different properties that come to market in Fulford – including modern new build estates from Mulgrave and Persimmon Homes – but due to its popularity, expect them to get snapped up very quickly.

Poppleton

Poppleton is a fantastic pick, especially for families looking to get on the York property ladder. The little village lies around four miles northwest of the city, with tranquil countryside nearby and a choice of different property types, including houses with sizable gardens for the little ones to run around in.

With good transport links to the city centre by rail and road, it serves professional commuters, while the local amenities have a real community focus. From open spaces to community centres and sports clubs, there are few better places in and around York to find your forever home.

South Bank & Bishopthorpe Road

Bishopthorpe Road was once where you’d find The Chocolate Works, the factory which produced Terry’s Chocolate. Although it closed in 2005, the area still offers plenty of sweet treats for potential homebuyers to enjoy here.

It’s close enough to the city centre that you can walk to the train station in less than 20 minutes, but far enough away to benefit from a peaceful environment. There’s green spaces and slices of nature in the form of Rowntree Park, the Knavesmire and the River Ouse, with a dynamic and community-focused space featuring its own bars, pubs and restaurants. What more could you ask for?

Another village in the City of York, Huntington can be found just three miles north of the centre. Road links and bus routes make it a breeze to get into York and beyond, while a wide range of local amenities mean you don’t have to travel anywhere if you don’t want to.

Huntington has a lovely collection of eateries, pubs and independent shops, with the Monks Cross and Vanguard shopping centres nearby to satisfy those bigger shopping sprees. Family-friendly entertainment comes courtesy of cinemas, bowling alleys and leisure centres, while open spaces and walks along the River Foss have your summer days out sorted.

Sutton-on-the-Forest

This quaint village just north of York has bundles of appeal to all sorts of buyers. Professionals are served by transport links and regular bus services for their commutes, while green spaces and family-friendly events cater to residents of all ages.

It’s a quieter area than some others on this list, but that’s no bad thing. The appealing residential streets have a strong sense of community woven into them, with picturesque scenes surrounding Sutton-on-the-Forest, including Sutton Park and the nearby Howardian Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. For those seeking a slower pace of life, this could be the one.
