If you’ve driven near the village of Flockton in West Yorkshire, you’ve probably spotted this stunning converted water tower on the skyline.
The distinctive structure is certainly eye-catching – but it’s also hiding a bit of a secret. Inside is a magnificent holiday home that you can rent for a Yorkshire stay like no other. We caught up with owner Angela Hudson to discover more about this special getaway destination.
With sleek glazing, 360-degree views over the rolling countryside and four ensuite bedrooms, along with all the modern comforts you could ask for, the Flockton water tower is an impressive conversion. But this is no gimmick property – it really did start its humble origins as a functioning water tower.
After driving past it and admiring its potential, Angela and husband Chris took a big risk when it went up for auction. With no planning permission and £110,000 lighter after getting stuck in a bidding war, they embarked on their biggest renovation project ever – with more than a handful of bumps along the way.
“It was literally a concrete shell, just as it was when the water was drained out of it,” Angela told us. “Access was literally just a metal ladder fixed to the wall on the inside for inspection by Yorkshire Water.”
But where that ladder once stood is now a spiral staircase that leads you up to the first floor, boasting floor to ceiling windows for awe-inspiring views. There’s a lounge area, a fully equipped kitchen with a large ceramic hob – ideal for catering to large groups – and a handmade curved oak table which seats 12 in the dining area.

Head up to the second floor and there’s two king bedrooms and one generous double. A fourth king bedroom is on the third floor, along with a secondary cosy seating area. It’s luxury from top to bottom, with each bedroom having their own ensuite bathroom with spacious walk-in showers, exquisite beds complete with high-quality linens, and underfloor heating throughout.
“I’ve gone for a hotel feel because that’s what I like when I go to stay somewhere,” Angela told us. “I love nice bedding so I’ve gone top-notch with the bedding. We spared no expense whatsoever.”
Outside, you’ll find space for six cars and a whole lot of countryside to explore. Step out and you can join the footpaths around Wakefield that sit right on the doorstep. The Yorkshire Sculpture Park and National Mining Museum are just five minutes away, with all the wonders of Leeds and the serenity of the Last of the Summer Wine country in Holmfirth just 20 minutes away.
With it sleeping up to eight, the Flockton water tower is an ideal choice for family get-togethers and escapes with friends. It attracts locals and travellers alike, with people flocking from all over the world to experience this Yorkshire gem. Angela told us it recently played host to visitors from South America over Christmas.
In terms of what you can expect when you book to stay, it’s all location, luxury and loads of relaxation.
“It’s very high-end. It’s very comfortable,” said Angela. “The light is amazing with all the glass. The views are stunning. You can see as far as the Moors over Lancashire in one direction and the far side of Leeds in Emley Moor’s Mast in another direction. So it’s worth it for the views alone.”
