A new independent florist has brought a splash of colour to one of York’s most popular neighbourhoods.
Thistle has opened on the corner of Bishopthorpe Road and Vine Street, with owner Kali Klimentova creating a beautifully designed shop specialising in fresh, seasonal flowers.
Sustainability and supporting local growers are at the heart of the new business, with around 60-70% of the flowers in the shop grown in England. Some are even grown in York, meaning customers can pick up blooms that have travelled just a few miles rather than being flown in from overseas.
Where: Bishopthorpe Road, York, North Yorkshire.
When: Now open.

Good to know: As well as fresh flowers, Thistle offers bespoke floristry, house and outdoor plants and gifts.
Ruby Rae’s Country Bar

York has a new country music venue, with Ruby Rae’s Country Bar bringing a taste of Nashville to Micklegate.
The venue has opened in the former Jalou nightclub, adding to the growing country and western scene in the city alongside recently opened Silver Spur.
Ruby Rae’s began in Newcastle and the York venue is the brand’s second location. Co-founder Dean Saunders chose York after developing a love for the city – and having been a regular at Jalou himself.
The former church has undergone a major transformation, with new flooring, a revamped stage and DJ booth and a brand-new bar. The interior has been designed with Nashville’s famous Ryman Auditorium as inspiration, with regional plates, flags, vinyl records, neon signs and ‘dollar walls’ adding to the country-bar feel.
Where: 2 Micklegate, York, North Yorkshire, YO1 6JG.
When: Now open.

Juicehaus is being created as a space where independent designers and makers can be discovered, with the new shop and studio set to showcase everything from soft furnishings, ceramics and textiles to lighting, prints, glass, woodwork and homeware.
Rather than traditional individual stalls, the shop will see makers’ work curated and styled together to create a complete interior, showing customers how individual pieces can work together in a home.
Where: Bishopthorpe Road, York, North Yorkshire.
When: Autumn 2026.
